Tomorrow's meeting: AGM and Wetherspoons strike

Wetherspoons' staff in Brighton are planning to go on strike. Find out why, when and how we can support them from their union reps at this week's NUJ branch meeting.

You'll also get the chance to meet Richard Palmer, the man who represents this area on the union’s NEC. He wants to know what the NUJ can do for you.

This will be our annual general meeting – at which the branch officers for the coming year will be elected. Posts up for election include Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. We also need an enthusiastic and energetic committee. If you’re interested in taking a more active role, or simply want to know more, contact acting branch secretary Brian Williams using this email address.

The meeting is on Thursday 27 September in the Craft Beer Company pub (22-23 Upper North Street, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 3FG), starting at 7pm. And if you've never been to a branch meeting before, don't worry. We like to keep it all as informal as possible and are much keener on making new friends than passing tedious motions. It would be great to see you there!

Brighton & Hove District Trades Union Council AGM 15 April 2015 King and Queen

Brighton and Hove District Trades Union Council
Annual General Meeting and 125th Anniversary

Wednesday 15th April 2015 7:30pm King and Queen Pub
Marlborough Place, Brighton, BN1 1UB

Local Union members, committee members and workplace reps are welcome.

Keynote Speakers, local reps organising in the Private and Public Sector

Richard Davies BECTU
Rep at the Duke of York's Cinema where union density has in a short time gone from virtually zero to over 50% of the workforce. BECTU members are now working to force union recognition and building a active union among the casualised workforce that can campaign for better contracts and working conditions.

Liz Ritson NUT
Rep at Hove Park School which has seen a joint parent/student/union campaign successfully fighting off privatisation combining industrial action and public campaigning.

We hope the discussion will enable those present to share experiences and advice as workplace reps with a huge range of experience.

125th Anniversary
All attendees will receive a booklet on the history of the Trades Council that was established in 1890. Brighton has long been a strong centre of union organisation even back in 1926 when our town was the most solidly out of any on the South Coast

Constitutional Amendment

To bring the constitution up to date with the position of affiliate AGMs the following is proposed by the executive.

The current Constitution reads:

6, The Annual General Meeting of the Council shall be held on the third Wednesday in February, and will be followed by the ordinary meeting.

Proposed amendment is to delete "be held on the third Wednesday in February" and insert "normally be held in April".

Effect:
First sentence of Section 6 would read:

6, The Annual General Meeting of the Council shall normally be held in April, and will be followed by the ordinary meeting.

Many thanks

Next meeting and AGM

The next Brighton and Mid-Sussex NUJ branch meeting will be at 7.30pm on Thursday 14 April in the upstairs room of the Earth and Stars (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Earth-and-Stars/132353693470534). We will be holding our AGM, so if anyone would like to volunteer for any of the officer roles, this is the time to do it. The roles are: secretary, treasurer, chairman, welfare officer and student officer.

After the meeting there will be a talk by Joanne Mallon. Joanne is a freelance journalist and specialist career coach for people in media – her website is at www.MediaLifeCoach.com. She also runs the women in media networking group MediaWomenUK www.MediaWomenUK.com and can be found tweeting @joannemallon and blogging at http://joannemallon.typepad.com/joanne_the_coach/.

Joanne will be talking about negotiating rates, and how we can all get paid more for the work we do. She'll be looking at why talking cash is so tough, even for experienced professionals, and giving practical tips you can use the next time someone asks: "What are your rates?"

Joanne's talks have been extremely popular in the past so please turn up early if you don't want to be disappointed. Non-members are welcome, although they will be asked to donate a bit of change to the NUJ charity, NUJ Extra (http://www.nujextra.org.uk/).

We will also be discussing the summer party and the NUJ annual delegate meeting.
